Child Inclusive Mediation: Giving Children a Voice

Going through a separation or divorce is an incredibly challenging experience for any family. While adults are busy traversing a maze of legal, financial, and emotional hurdles, it is often the children who feel the impacts most deeply. Young people can easily feel caught in the middle of complex adult decisions, leaving them feeling confused, anxious, or entirely unheard during a massive life transition.
Mediation Plus is proud to announce an important expansion to our conflict resolution services. As part of our comprehensive Family Mediation offering, we are now providing in-house Child Inclusive Mediation. This specialised approach ensures that young people have a safe, neutral space to express their feelings and share their unique perspectives during family transitions.
Understanding your children’s perspective can completely transform how you approach co-parenting with your ex-partner. By actively giving young people a voice, families can reach agreements that sincerely reflect the needs, hopes, and welfare of all involved. Read on to learn exactly how this process works, the benefits it brings to local families, and how you can access our newly expanded support network.
What exactly is Child Inclusive Mediation?
When parents separate, they often try their hardest to protect their children from the fallout. Despite these good intentions, children still absorb the tension and changes around them. Child Inclusive Mediation is a formal process that brings the child’s voice directly into the mediation room, without forcing them to bear the burden of adult decision-making.
During this process, a specially qualified mediator holds a private, confidential conversation with the child or children involved. The goal is to listen to their thoughts, feelings, and worries about the separation and the future. The mediator then informs the parents what the child or children have asked the mediator to relay to them during a separate session, helping them understand how their children are coping.
This process is generally suitable for children aged 10 and over, though it can sometimes be adapted for slightly younger children depending on their maturity. It is entirely voluntary for the child. They are never asked to choose between parents or make final decisions about living arrangements. Instead, they are given an opportunity to share their feelings with an impartial professional who can communicate their needs appropriately.
Improving our Family Mediation service
For decades, Mediation Plus has been dedicated to helping individuals and families resolve disputes constructively. Our Family Mediation service has supported countless separating couples in making practical arrangements for their finances, property, and children. Now, through integrating Child Inclusive Mediation into our services, we are taking a massive step forward in family-centered dispute resolution.
This service is based in East Sussex, overing support in person locally and nationally online meaning families across Sussex and beyond can access this vital support. We understand that resolving family disputes can be a concern for many parents. Fortunately, eligible families can take advantage of the Family Mediation Voucher scheme, which provides a financial contribution towards the cost of mediation sessions relating to child arrangements. This scheme makes it easier for parents to access the help they need without adding severe financial stress to an already difficult situation.
Celebrating our newest Child Inclusive Mediator
We are extremely excited to celebrate a massive professional milestone within our team. Lauren Brosson, an incredibly dedicated Mediation Plus Family Mediator, has officially become a qualified Child Inclusive Mediator.
Achieving this qualification requires extensive training, immense empathy, and an in-depth understanding of family relationships. Lauren has demonstrated outstanding skill and devotion to helping families navigate their darkest moments. Her new qualification means we can directly support more young people, ensuring their voices are listened to and valued throughout the mediation process. We are incredibly proud of Lauren and excited about the positive influence she will continue to have on our community.
