Could you join us as an intergenerational mediator?

We are particularly interested in hearing from people with experience of working with children and / or families, who live in East Sussex to join our Time2Talk volunteer mediator team. We are also recruiting volunteers for our neighbourhood mediation programme, which runs across East and West Sussex.

We are running our five day training course in November 2024, repeated in January 2025, and have funded spaces for new volunteers joining our team. You can find the dates under our ‘Train with Us’ page.

You can find out more about the role below, and can download a copy of our application form. If you would to have an informal chat with one of one of our team before applying, please get in touch with your contact details.

Mediation Plus Mediators

Our mediators are ordinary people who live or work in East Sussex and volunteer their time to help people resolve their disputes. They are at the heart of our charity, and we work hard to ensure they are supported to provide high-quality mediation and that everyone enjoys their experience of volunteering with us.

All our mediators complete an accredited mediation training course, are DBS checked, and many have additional specialist mediation skills and training in areas such as workplace, family and commercial mediation. Our mediators usually work in pairs and are supported by our case co-ordinators.

Interested in becoming a volunteer mediator?

As well as intergenerational mediators, we are also looking for neighbourhood mediators. You do not have to have any special skills or experience to become a mediator. You just need to be a good listener and communicator, to respect our policy of confidentiality, to be non-judgemental, and to be committed to the principles of mediation. To register your interest in becoming a volunteer, please get in touch to tell us about the type of mediation you are interested in and the area you would be able to cover.

What would you be expected to do?

After your training and DBS check, you need to be available to volunteer with us for at least 18 months. We normally arrange our mediation visits during the day or in the early evenings and initial visits usually last between 1 and 2 hours. These take place in our offices, online, and occasionally in people’s homes.

Our cases come from all over East Sussex and at different times, so we cannot say how many cases you may work on, but we expect most of our mediators will be involved in at least 6 cases a year.

Reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
